How to Get Ready for GTA 6 Launch (Pre-load & Storage)

Launch checklist

1. Know when pre-load starts

Digital pre-orders on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S can start downloading on November 12, 2026 at local midnight, one week before launch. The PlayStation Store lists this as a 7-day pre-load for both editions. Pre-load starts by local time, so players in different time zones begin at different moments.

Pre-loading doesn't let you play early. It only downloads the files so you can start as soon as the game unlocks.

2. Free up storage (size not confirmed)

Rockstar, PlayStation and Xbox haven't officially confirmed GTA 6's download size. On October 27, a third-party tracker that reads PlayStation Store data reported 210 GB on PS5. Treat that as a report, not an official number. No Xbox Series X|S size has surfaced, and a day-one update could change the final total.

What you can do now:

• Clear out games and captures you don't need well before November 12.
• Leave extra room on top of the reported figure in case the day-one update adds more.
• If you install games to expanded storage, check that drive has enough space too.

3. Check which edition you own

If you pre-ordered a while ago, confirm what you actually bought:

• Look up the order in your PlayStation Store or Microsoft account purchase history.
• Ultimate Edition owners should see the Ultimate Edition Upgrade among the game's add-ons.
• Standard owners can still buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade later. You don't need to rebuy the game.

4. Physical copy? Redeem the code first

Boxed copies of GTA 6 contain a download code, not a disc. You must redeem it on PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store and download the whole game, so a physical copy still needs the same free space and internet connection as digital. Coverage of Rockstar's pre-order details says physical copies are available from November 12 so you can pre-load too. Store delivery dates can vary, so check with your retailer.

5. Claim (or skip) the GTA+ month

Digital pre-orders include one free month of GTA+. It auto-renews at the regular monthly price after the free month, so set a reminder to cancel if you don't want to keep it. PlayStation's claim deadline is March 31, 2027, and Xbox gives 180 days after pre-ordering. Some regions are excluded on PlayStation; see the editions guide for the list.

PS5 Pro and Xbox Series S notes

• PS5 Pro: the PlayStation Store lists GTA 6 as PS5 Pro Enhanced. Sony and Rockstar haven't detailed what that means, so there's nothing Pro-specific you need to set up.
• Xbox Series S: the game is listed for Xbox Series X|S, so Series S is supported. Rockstar hasn't published Series S-specific requirements or settings.

Region and unlock time

Rockstar hasn't published an exact unlock time. Most coverage expects the game to unlock at local midnight on November 19 in each region, which matches how pre-load works. If you're relying on the free GTA+ month or the Vintage Vice City Pack, the Xbox Store sets the purchase deadline at 23:59:59 on November 19, 2026.
