Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 brings back a San Andreas-style body system. Overeating makes Jason and Lucia gain weight, working out builds muscle, and going without sleep visibly wears them down. An in-game health app tracks rest, and Rockstar says being well rested affects how some attributes regenerate.
- Eating too much makes Jason and Lucia gain weight
- Working out builds muscle and helps them lose weight
- Sleep is tracked and affects how some attributes regenerate

Where this comes from
The body system was first confirmed in a long Dazed interview with Rockstar developers published in late August 2026, then picked up by Kotaku, GamesRadar+ and GameSpot. More detail on sleep came from Rockstar North's Rob Nelson during a hands-on preview reported in early September by GamesRadar+ and Insider Gaming. Everything below sticks to those reports.
Eating and weight
What you feed Jason and Lucia changes their bodies. Eat too much — fast food is the obvious example — and they put on weight. Food also restores health, according to Kotaku's round-up of the previews. Coverage describes this as the return of the San Andreas system, where CJ's build changed with his diet, rather than the lighter cosmetic touches seen in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Rockstar hasn't shared calorie values, how quickly weight changes, or how much food it takes to see a difference.
Working out
Exercise lets both characters lose weight and build muscle tone. Jason is shown working out in Trailer 2, and both characters can treat it as an activity to do together.
A hands-on preview described by Insider Gaming adds more specifics: gyms are spread around the map, finishing three exercises in a session completes the day's workout and improves health, and cardio improves stamina. GamesRadar+ also reports that muscle fades if you stop keeping it up. These details come from preview sessions rather than official documentation, so they could change at launch.
Sleep and fatigue
Rockstar says lack of sleep, long police chases and multi-day benders all show on Jason's and Lucia's faces and bodies. A health app on the in-game phone tracks whether they're well rested. According to Rob Nelson, being rested "will have some effect on regen of certain attributes," and the game tracks "lots of things."
What we don't know: which attributes are affected, how much sleep counts as enough, and whether the penalty for skipping sleep is more than cosmetic.
Still unconfirmed
- Whether weight affects stamina, speed, combat or mission access the way it did in San Andreas.
- The full list of gym exercises and the exact stat rewards.
- Exact numbers for weight gain, muscle loss or sleep needs.
- Specific timers and penalties quoted on some fan sites — none of these come from Rockstar.
FAQ
Can Jason and Lucia get fat in GTA 6?+
Yes. Rockstar confirmed that overeating makes both characters put on weight, similar to CJ in GTA San Andreas. Exercise lets them slim down and build muscle.
Do you have to sleep in GTA 6?+
Sleep is tracked by a health app on the in-game phone. Rockstar's Rob Nelson says being well rested has some effect on how certain attributes regenerate, but Rockstar hasn't said which attributes or how much sleep you need.
Is there a gym in GTA 6?+
Working out is confirmed, and Jason is shown exercising in Trailer 2. A hands-on preview reports gyms around the map, but exact exercises and rewards haven't been officially detailed.
Does your weight affect gameplay?+
Unconfirmed. In San Andreas, weight affected stamina and some missions. Rockstar hasn't said whether GTA 6 does anything similar beyond appearance.
